When General Electrical Becomes Level 2

Some Jobs Start Standard. Not All of Them Stay That Way.

Electrical work has a line most tradespeople can’t cross. Anything on your side of the meter — power points, switchboards, lighting circuits — that’s a general electrician’s domain. Anything on the network side — your connection to the grid, service lines, metering equipment — requires a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP).
The two jobs often overlap. A switchboard upgrade can uncover undersized consumer mains. A service line inspection can reveal a connection that needs formal Ausgrid approval before you can proceed. When that happens, most electricians have to stop and call someone else in.
Journey Electrical doesn’t have that problem. We hold Ausgrid Accreditation 6807 across all four Level 2 categories — metering, overhead, underground, and connections. When your job crosses the line, we keep moving.
No second contractor. No delays. No finger-pointing between trades.

Switchboard Upgrades Newcastle

A Modern Switchboard Is the Foundation of a Safe Home.

Older switchboards — those with ceramic fuses, no RCDs, or insufficient circuit protection — aren’t just inconvenient. They’re a liability. An overloaded fuse doesn’t trip the way a modern circuit breaker does. A fault on an unprotected circuit doesn’t get caught the way an RCD catches it.
A switchboard upgrade replaces that risk with a properly sized, correctly protected system built to current Australian standards. Modern circuit breakers, RCDs on relevant circuits, and enough capacity for the way your household actually runs — EV chargers, air conditioning, induction cooktops — without tripping the board every time two appliances run at once.
We Assess Before We Recommend.

Journey Electrical uses thermal imaging to assess your existing switchboard before recommending replacement. A thermal scan can reveal heat build-up in connections that look fine to the naked eye — identifying fault conditions before they become failures. You get an honest assessment of what’s needed, not an upsell based on guesswork.

EV Charger Installation Newcastle

Home EV Charging Done Properly — From the Charger to the Board.

Installing a home EV charger isn’t just a matter of mounting a unit on the garage wall. The right solution depends on your vehicle’s charging requirements, your current switchboard capacity, and whether your home is on single-phase or three-phase power.
Journey Electrical manages the full installation — charger unit, wiring, and all switchboard work. We assess your property first and recommend the right setup for your situation. No surprises mid-job, no unexpected add-ons on the invoice.
If your EV charging needs also require a three-phase power upgrade, that work is handled under the same roof. No need to coordinate separate contractors.

Safety Switches, Smoke Alarms & Compliance

Protecting Your Home. Meeting Your Legal Obligations.

Homeowners & Landlords

Safety Switches (RCDs)

A safety switch monitors the current flowing through a circuit and cuts power in milliseconds if a fault is detected. They’re the reason electrical faults don’t become fatalities.
NSW law requires RCDs on any new circuits installed in a property. While there’s no blanket requirement to retrofit older switchboards, property managers, insurers, and risk-conscious homeowners increasingly expect them as standard.

NSW Rental Properties

Smoke Alarm Compliance

NSW landlords have clear legal responsibilities when it comes to smoke alarms. Working alarms must be installed on every level of the rental property, must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786, and must be tested and confirmed functional at the start of every tenancy.
Maintenance and replacement is the landlord’s obligation — not the tenant’s. Journey Electrical installs compliant smoke alarm systems and provides written confirmation of installation for your records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About General Electrical Services

Straight answers to the questions we’re asked most often. No jargon, no run-around.

Q

Do I need a safety switch in my home in NSW?

NSW does not mandate RCDs on all existing circuits, but any new circuits installed must include them. That said, installing safety switches across your home’s power and lighting circuits is strongly recommended — by insurers, property managers, and electricians alike. They’re one of the most cost-effective protections you can have. Journey Electrical can assess your current switchboard and advise what’s worth upgrading.

Q

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Newcastle?

Switchboard upgrade pricing varies depending on the size of your home, the number of circuits, and whether your existing wiring supports the upgrade. Journey Electrical uses thermal imaging to assess your current switchboard before recommending any replacement — so you’re not paying for guesswork. Call 0414 470 873 to discuss your setup.

Q

Can you install an EV charger at my home?

Yes. Journey Electrical handles full EV charger installations — from the charger unit itself through to the switchboard and all associated wiring. Single-phase 7kW and three-phase 22kW+ installations are both available. If your home needs a three-phase upgrade to support faster charging, that work can be handled in-house as part of the same job.

Q

What's the difference between a general electrician and a Level 2 electrician?

A general electrician handles the wiring and electrical work inside your home — power points, switchboards, lighting, and so on. A Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to work on the infrastructure that connects your property to the electricity network — metering, service lines, and new or upgraded connections. Journey Electrical holds both credentials, so we can manage a job from start to finish without bringing in a second contractor.

Q

How often should I get an electrical inspection?

There’s no fixed legal requirement for routine residential inspections, but most electricians recommend a safety check every ten years in a standard home, or before purchasing a property. If your home is older, has had previous DIY work, or your power bills have spiked unexpectedly, an inspection is worthwhile. Journey Electrical offers thermal imaging assessments that can identify faults invisible to the naked eye.

Q

Are you able to work on rental properties in Newcastle?

Yes. Journey Electrical services residential rental properties across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, the Hunter, and Port Stephens. We provide documentation for your records at the end of every job, which is important for landlords and property managers maintaining compliance records.

Q

What smoke alarm laws apply to NSW rental properties?

In NSW, landlords are legally responsible for ensuring working smoke alarms are installed on every level of a rental property. Alarms must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786, and must be tested and confirmed functional at the start of every tenancy. Landlords are also responsible for ongoing maintenance and replacement. Journey Electrical installs compliant smoke alarms and provides documentation confirming the installation.

Q

Can you upgrade my switchboard and do Level 2 work on the same job?

Yes — and this is one of Journey Electrical’s key advantages. Many jobs that start as a switchboard upgrade reveal an underlying need for Level 2 work, such as undersized consumer mains or a network connection issue. Because we hold all four Level 2 categories under Ausgrid Accreditation 6807, we can handle both sides of the job. No second contractor, no coordination headaches, no delays.
